Hum

 Hum

A girl walked through an empty city.

All she could hear was the gruff humming of her father,

The gravel in his throat makes the river of music

Chuckle across and through the rocks,

Making the sound all the more wonderful.

But the melancholy behind the tune stings.

An overlooked tear slid down his cheek.

She wanted to say something,

But she couldn’t find her tongue.

So instead, she squeezed his calloused hand.

He squeezed back and smiled.

A woman walks through an empty city,

Dark clouds gathered overhead,

So she takes shelter.

The room is dark and dusty,

But by the window

Sits an old guitar.

A nostalgic tear rolls down her cheek,

As her now calloused hands form the chords.

She smiles,

And sings a song her father used to hum.

The melody fills the void buildings,

And even though there's no one around to hear her,

She hopes he can.
